Location : British Columbia
Year : 1962
Used, The iconic Jaguar E-Type, or XKE in the North American market, was introduced to great acclaim in March 1961.Even the highly discerning Enzo Ferrari proclaimed it the most beautiful car ever made. The E-Type's styling, performance (150 mph (241 km/h) top speed, sub-7-second zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration) and highly competitive pricing made it an instant success.
The Series 1 began production for export only in March 1961 with domestic (RH drive) domestic models coming four months later in July 1961.

The cars at this time used the triple SU carburetted 3.8-litre six-cylinder from the XK150S. The first 500 E-Types built utilised external bonnet latches, welded hood louvers and a flat floor design which are still referred to today as flat floors. These cars are very rare and are considered some of the most valuable today. After that, due to driver demand, the floors were dished to provide more leg room and the twin bonnet latches moved to inside the car for convenience and aesthetics.

At the time of its introduction most cars were still using drum brakes, live rear axles, and had rather mediocre performance. The E-Type arrived on the scene with, monocoque construction, disc brakes, rack and pinion steering, independent front and rear suspension, derived from Jaguar's highly successful D-Type racing car, which had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for three consecutive years (1955-1957). The E-Type was one of the very first production cars to employ the racing derived monocoque body tub attached to a tubular framework, with the engine bolted directly to the frame. All E-Types featured independent coil spring rear suspension with torsion bar front ends, and four wheel disc brakes, in-board at the rear, all were power-assisted. Jaguar was one of the first vehicle manufacturers to equip cars with disc brakes as standard from the XK150 in 1958.

The Series 1 (except for late 1967 models) are easily recognised by their glass-covered headlights, small mouth front air intake opening, small signal lights and tail-lights above the bumpers and the distinctive dual chrome exhaust tips exiting under the number plate in the rear.
As well as its exterior beauty the 3.8-litre cars have a very sporting interior featuring leather-upholstered bucket seats, a distinctly aluminum-trimmed centre instrument panel and console (changed to vinyl and leather in 1963), and the famous (or infamous) Moss four-speed gearbox with no synchromesh for first gear. Optional extras included chrome spoked wheels and a detachable hard top for the roadster.
Worldwide production, including both left and right hand drive examples, comprise a total of 7,828 3.8-litre Series 1 roadsters built from 1961 to 1967.

The car on offer here, vin 877656, is a meticulously restored, very well documented, numbers matching, Series I E-Type. Starting with the Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate this shows the car was built on July 03, 1962 and dispatched on July 13, 1962. It is listed as Opalescent Dark Green with Black Interior and Black Hood (top). It was dispatched to M & A Kooheji, the distributor in Bahrein, Persia (as known at the time), but delivered to Mr. W.B. Woodward in the United States. There is no documentation but it was believed to be part of a commercial trade agreement. 877656 left the factory with the two available options, chrome wire wheels and an original factory removable hardtop

Mr. Woodward kept 877656 for an unknown number of years in Detroit MI and then Kansas City KA before selling it on to Mr. Vaughn Burkholder of Wichita KA.

There are no records available of Mr. Burkholder's ownership. It is believed during Mr. Burkholder's ownership the car had a bare metal repaint. At that time some of the black interior trim was change to green and Series II bucket seats were added.

Mr. Burkholder subsequently sold the vehicle via Kansas City Imports Inc. in September of 1992 to Mr. Fritz Mayhew of Bloomfield Hills MI and Shenfield, Essex, UK. Before purchasing the car Mr. Mayhew had a thorough appraisal completed by Peter Doc Scadron, Classic Jaguar Specialist. Mr. Scadron's three pages of highly detailed notes describe a 30 year old car with 78,965 miles in extraordinary condition. His overall opinion and recommendations, You hit the KC Lottery today - Buy the Car!

Mr. Mayhew took those recommendations to heart and purchased the car. 877656 was then stripped to bare metal and repainted this time in British Racing Green to factory formula. Metal colour swatches of original Opalescent Dark Green and British Racing Green included. The interior was stripped and completely replaced with correct Biscuit Connelly leather upholstery, Wilton carpets and trim from G.W. Bartlett Co., Inc. Swatches included. The Series II seats and rails were removed and the original reupholstered Series I shell seats and rails installed. A Mohair convertible top to match the interior was installed and the Black Factory hardtop refurbished.

While Mr. Mayhew was interested in showing the car he did not want a trailer queen. The car was fully serviced and mechanically upgraded to improve safety and functionality on a vehicle he would subsequently drive 500 miles every summer. The list includes;

5 X 15 Dayton Wire Wheels
High capacity aluminum radiator and cooling fan
High torque gear reduction starter motor
Stainless steel exhaust system
Cartridge style oil filter adaptor
Petronix electronic ignition and coil
Wilwood brake calipers, XJS rear brake discs and braided stainless steel brake lines
Complete front suspension dis-assembly and rebuild, new bushings and mounts
Complete rear suspension dis-assembly and rebuild
New front and rear shock absorbers
New 15 diameter steering wheel
Lucas PL700 Headlamps
Period correct front seat belts

Mr. Mayhew did show 887656 with the following result;

Best in Class - Meadowbrook Concours D'Elegance - 1994
First Place, Driven Class, Michigan JCNA - 1997 - 9.978 points
Best in Class - Bay Harbour Concours D'Elegance - 2002

All of the above is fully documented with invoices and extensive photo records along with the Jaguar Heritage Certificate, original matching numbers vehicle chassis commission plate, original complete tool roll and jack, reproduction driver's handbook, lubrication chart and vinyl storage wallet and a set of factory service manuals.

In 2014 877656 was acquired by the current owner, an experienced collector and Jaguar enthusiast, and imported to Western Canada. Under his careful stewardship the car went through a 2 year refresh and refurbishment including;

New exhaust manifolds
New heater blower
Complete cylinder head overhaul
Complete transmission overhaul
New aluminum radiator
New water pump
New fuel pump
New tires (5)
The paint was given a major refresh followed by a total wet sanding and polish including under the bonnet. The factory hardtop was fully refurbished, stripped, painted and wet sanded and polished.

The car was shown during 2016 and was judged the “2016 JCNA NW Region Concours Champion
Div. Award” (97.865 points) as well as two 2nd in Class Awards and a First in Show Award.

An outstanding example of an early Series I E-Type OTS including rare factory hardtop ready for show.
